About Icelandic Poppy
Icelandic Poppy (Papaver nudicaule) is a hardy, drought-tolerant perennial known for its delicate, papery blooms appearing in beautiful shades of orange, white, red, and yellow. Flowering continuously throughout spring and summer, these poppies grow up to 60cm tall, creating an attractive display in any garden. Highly appealing to butterflies and bees, Icelandic poppies are perfect for pollinator gardens, borders, and as cut flowers. Despite their delicate appearance, these plants thrive under diverse conditions and require minimal care.

Where Can You Grow Icelandic Poppy?
Icelandic Poppy thrives in Zones 3-9, preferring full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Ideal for borders, rock gardens, containers, and mass plantings.

History and Historical Uses
Originally native to subarctic regions of Europe, Asia, and North America, Icelandic Poppies have long been cultivated for their beauty and resilience. Popular in cottage gardens and naturalized settings, these flowers have historically symbolized peace and remembrance and remain favourites among gardeners for their cheerful blooms and ease of cultivation.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Direct sow seeds outdoors in early spring or autumn; bloom steadily from spring to summer.
Zones 5-7: Start seeds indoors in late winter, or direct sow outdoors after the last frost.
Zones 3-4: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost; transplant after danger of frost has passed.

How to Grow and Harvest Icelandic Poppy

• Planting: Sow seeds lightly (3mm or 1/8in deep), spaced 20-30cm (8-12in) apart.

• Watering: Water regularly until established; drought-tolerant thereafter.

• Harvesting: Cut flower stems when blooms begin to open, for longest vase life.

• Maintenance: Deadhead spent flowers regularly to prolong blooming season and prevent self-seeding.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

• Allow Pods to Mature: Let some flower heads fully mature into seed pods.

• Harvest Seeds: Collect seeds when pods turn brown and dry out.

• Dry and Store: Ensure seeds are thoroughly dry, then store in airtight containers.

• Store: Keep stored seeds cool and dark; seeds remain viable for up to 3 years.
