Seed the Change!
Seeds of Diversity Canada estimates that nearly 75% of vegetable varieties have disappeared. 25% of native plants are at risk and diversity in flower gardens is shrinking.
We are working to restore the biodiversity that was once common in gardens, farms, and nature around Canada!

About Mini Popcorn Mix
Mini Popcorn Mix is a vibrant and whimsical blend of heirloom popcorn varieties including Glass Gem, Carousel, and Rainbow. These stunning miniature cobs pack a visual punch with kernels in every imaginable colour—white, blue, green, pink, yellow and more—making them a joyful surprise whether you’re popping them or displaying them as décor. Plants grow up to 3m tall and typically produce 2–4 cobs each. This mix brings magic to the garden and is perfect for those looking to grow something a little different.
Where Can You Grow Mini Popcorn Mix?
Ideal for Zones 4–9, this variety thrives in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Grow in rows or clusters for good pollination and cob formation.
History and Historical Uses
Each of the varieties in this mix has deep roots in traditional agriculture. Glass Gem in particular is the result of generations of corn breeding by Indigenous growers in the American Southwest. Historically, colourful popcorns were not just functional foods, but culturally meaningful and often used ornamentally. Today, these heritage types continue to delight gardeners and eaters alike with their beauty and unique story.
Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8–9: Direct sow after last frost; harvest when husks are fully dry in late summer.
Zones 5–7: Start indoors 3–4 weeks before last frost and transplant carefully, or direct sow in late spring.
Zones 4: Start indoors in biodegradable pots for transplanting after danger of frost.
How to Grow and Harvest Mini Popcorn Mix
Planting: Sow seeds 2.5cm (1in) deep and 20cm (8in) apart in blocks for best pollination.
Watering: Keep soil moist until established; water deeply during dry periods.
Harvesting: Leave ears to dry fully on the stalk. When kernels are hard and glossy, harvest and finish drying indoors.
Maintenance: Ensure full sun, space plants properly for airflow, and support stalks if needed due to height.
Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply
Allow Full Maturity: Leave cobs on plant until husks are dry and brown.
Harvest Carefully: Pick cobs and remove husks, then dry thoroughly indoors.
Dry and Store: Ensure kernels are hard and dry before shelling; store in breathable bags or glass jars.
Store: Keep cool and dry. Seeds remain viable for up to 5 years.
