About Nasturtium
Nasturtium is one of the most cheerful and rewarding plants you can grow. A vigorous annual with sprawling stems that can climb or cascade up to 2 metres, it fills the garden with bright orange, red, and yellow blooms. Both decorative and edible, its round leaves, colourful flowers, and green seed pods offer a fresh peppery flavour similar to watercress. Whether planted in the ground, containers, or hanging baskets, nasturtiums bring bold colour, flavour, and pollinators into your space all summer long.

Where Can You Grow Nasturtium?
Nasturtiums thrive in Zones 3-9 and grow best in full sun with well-drained soil. Avoid overly rich soil, which will encourage foliage at the expense of blooms. They are perfect for planters, vertical supports, along borders, or spilling over garden walls.

History and Historical Uses
Native to South and Central America, nasturtium was introduced to Europe in the 16th century, quickly becoming a garden favourite for its vibrant appearance and culinary potential. All parts of the plant have been traditionally used in salads, herbal vinegars, and for garnishing dishes. The leaves and flowers are rich in vitamin C and the unripe seed pods are often pickled as a caper substitute.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Direct sow outdoors in early spring; succession sow every few weeks for extended blooms.
Zones 5-7: Direct sow after last frost or start indoors and transplant.
Zone 3-4: Start indoors 3-4 weeks before last frost date and transplant after risk has passed.

How to Grow and Harvest Nasturtium
Planting: Sow seeds 1.5-2.5cm (0.5-1in) deep, 25-30cm (10-12in) apart.
Watering: Water moderately; allow soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Harvesting: Pick leaves, flowers, and green seed pods regularly for fresh use.
Maintenance: Deadhead to encourage continued blooming. Pinch back vines to contain growth if needed.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply
Select Healthy Plants: Allow seed pods to fully mature and dry on the vine.
Harvest Seeds: Pick once brown and papery; remove and clean.
Dry and Store: Dry thoroughly and store in a cool, dark, dry place.
Store: Seeds remain viable for up to 5 years when properly stored.
