Seed the Change!

Seeds of Diversity Canada estimates that nearly 75% of vegetable varieties have disappeared. 25% of native plants are at risk and diversity in flower gardens is shrinking.

We are working to restore the biodiversity that was once common in gardens, farms, and nature around Canada!

About
Our Plant Medicine Collection brings together five time-honoured herbal allies—Calendula, Feverfew, Holy Basil, Mullein, and St. John’s Wort—to help you cultivate your own herbal apothecary. Each variety has been selected for its proven efficacy in treating skin irritations, soothing headaches, uplifting mood, and supporting respiratory health. Whether you’re a seasoned herbalist or just starting your journey, these seeds are the perfect foundation for a living medicine cabinet.

Where Can You Grow
These versatile annuals thrive in cottage-style and medicinal herb gardens. Plant them in well-drained beds or containers with full sun to light shade. Regular watering and nutrient-rich soil will ensure vigorous growth and abundant foliage for harvest.

History and Historical Uses
Individually prized for centuries across Europe and Asia, these herbs have played central roles in traditional medicine:

  • Calendula for wound healing and skin inflammation

  • Feverfew for migraine prevention and fever reduction

  • Holy Basil for stress relief and immune support

  • Mullein for soothing coughs and lung complaints

  • St. John’s Wort for mood balancing and mild nerve pain

Canadian Zone Information

  • Zones 3–9: All five species perform reliably across these regions; start indoors 4–6 weeks before last frost in cooler zones.

How to Grow and Harvest

  • Sowing: Direct sow after frost or transplant established seedlings.

  • Spacing: Allow 12–18 in between plants for good air circulation.

  • Harvest: Pinch young leaves and flowers as needed; harvest before full bloom for peak potency.

  • Drying: Hang in small bundles in a dark, ventilated area until crisp.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

  • Isolation: Ensure 3 ft separation between varieties to maintain purity.

  • Maturation: Allow flowers and seed heads to fully ripen and dry on the plant.

  • Cleaning: Thresh seed heads over a clean surface, winnow to remove chaff, and store in airtight containers.
