About Blue-eyed Grass

Idaho Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium idahoense) is a delightful perennial native to Western North America (unlike its Eastern cousin Sisyrinchium atlanticum or its Californian equivalent Sisyrinchium bellum). Despite its name, this plant belongs to the iris family, producing lovely purplish-blue blooms that rise above clumps of slender, grass-like foliage. It grows to a modest height of 15-30cm (6-12in), making it ideal for rock gardens, pathways, and naturalised areas.

This drought-tolerant plant is a favourite among pollinators, adding ecological value while requiring minimal maintenance. Its vibrant blooms make it a star in any landscape.

Where Can You Grow Blue-eyed Grass

Blue-eyed Grass thrives in Zones 4-9, preferring full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. It is well-suited for rock gardens, dry meadows, and naturalised areas.

Canadian Zone Information

• Zones 8-9: Sow seeds directly in autumn or early spring for natural stratification.
• Zones 5-7: Start seeds indoors in late winter and transplant outdoors after the last frost.
• Zones 4: Sow seeds in spring after the last frost, using mulch to retain soil warmth.

How to Grow and Harvest Blue-eyed Grass

1. Planting: Sow seeds 3mm (1/8in) deep and space plants 15-20cm (6-8in) apart.
2. Watering: Water lightly during establishment; the plant is drought-tolerant once mature.
3. Maintenance: Remove spent blooms to encourage prolonged flowering and prevent self-seeding in controlled areas.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

1. Allow to Flower and Seed: Let plants bloom fully and form seed pods.
2. Harvest Seeds: Once pods dry and turn brown, collect them before they split.
3. Dry and Clean: Spread pods in a well-ventilated area to dry. Gently crush to release seeds and remove debris.
4. Store: Store seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Properly stored seeds remain viable for 2-3 years.
