About Cape Gooseberry
Cape Gooseberry, also known as Large Physalis, is a striking and productive plant grown for its delicious orange fruit wrapped in decorative papery husks. Reaching heights of up to 2m, these warm-loving plants perform best in greenhouses or the hottest corners of the garden. The fruit has a sweet, slightly tart flavour and is excellent fresh, cooked into desserts, or preserved as jam. Remarkably, it also stores well for several months if kept in its husks.

Where Can You Grow Cape Gooseberry?
These plants prefer full sun and warmth, thriving in Zones 4-9 with the added protection of a greenhouse or warm microclimate. Ideal for greenhouse beds, large containers, or sheltered outdoor plots with plenty of heat.

History and Historical Uses
Cape Gooseberries (Physalis peruviana) originate from South America and have long been cultivated for both their ornamental appearance and nutritional fruit. Valued globally for their high vitamin C and antioxidant content, they’ve become a favourite in both home gardens and gourmet kitchens. Known for their versatility, the fruit can be used in chutneys, baked goods, salads, and preserves.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Direct sow or transplant into greenhouse or warm garden beds after frost.
Zones 5-7: Start indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost and transplant into greenhouse or protected warm area.
Zones 4: Greenhouse recommended; start early indoors and transplant after last frost.

How to Grow and Harvest Cape Gooseberry

Planting: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before final frost, transplant seedlings 60cm (24in) apart.
Watering: Keep soil moist but well-drained; reduce watering slightly as fruit matures.
Harvesting: Pick fruit when husks turn dry and papery and fruit is golden-orange.
Maintenance: Provide trellising or support for tall stems; prune to improve airflow.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

Choose Ripe Fruit: Use fully ripe fruit from strong, healthy plants.
Extract Seeds: Scoop seeds from the fruit and rinse clean of pulp.
Dry and Store: Air-dry on a cloth or screen for several days, then store in a cool, dry place.
Viability: Seeds remain viable for 4-6 years if stored properly.
