About Ground Cherry
Ground Cherry or Golden Berry or Strawberry Tomato (Physalis pruinosa) is a unique and highly productive fruiting plant that produces small, golden berries encased in delicate papery husks. The name Golden Berry can also refer to a Cape Gooseberry, which is the larger cousin of the Ground Cherry. This warm-season crop thrives in sunny, sheltered locations and is well-suited to greenhouse or patio container growing.
The fruit has a bright, tropical flavour with a perfect balance of tartness and sweetness, making it excellent for fresh eating, jams, desserts, or even savoury dishes. These plants are easy to grow and require minimal care once established. While they prefer warm conditions, they can also naturalize in coastal gardens with proper protection from frost.
Where Can You Grow Ground Cherry?
Goldenberry thrives in Zones 4-9, preferring full sun and well-drained soil. It does best in sheltered locations, such as greenhouses, raised beds, or warm garden spots with good airflow.
History and Historical Uses
Ground Cherry is native to Mexico and wider Central America, where it has been enjoyed for centuries for its unique, sweet-tart flavour. Historically used fresh, dried, or cooked into preserves, pies, and sauces, Ground Cherries became popular with early European settlers and have been widely grown in North American gardens since the 1800s. Their papery husks provided natural protection, making them a reliable fruit crop even in cooler climates. Today, they remain cherished for their delightful taste and ease of cultivation.
Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Direct sow in late spring after all risk of frost has passed.
Zones 5-7: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost, then transplant outdoors once warm.
Zones 4: Best grown in containers or greenhouses for a longer growing season.
How to Grow and Harvest Ground Cherry
- Planting: Sow seeds 6mm (1/4in) deep, spacing plants 45-60cm (18-24in) apart.
- Watering: Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
- Support: While compact, plants benefit from light staking to support heavy fruiting.
- Harvesting: Pick fruit when husks turn light brown and papery. Fully ripe berries fall to the ground.
- Storage: Store in their husks in a cool, dry place for several weeks.
Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply
- Choose the Best Fruit: Select fully ripened berries from strong, healthy plants.
- Extract the Seeds: Remove seeds from the flesh and rinse thoroughly.
- Dry and Clean: Spread seeds on a paper towel to dry completely.
- Store: Keep in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Seeds remain viable for up to 5 years.
