About Green Curled Lettuce
Green Curled Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) is a delightful variety that has adapted beautifully to coastal BC gardens since 2008. Known for its finely curled, delicate leaves, this lettuce is the first to sprout in the cool days of January and continues to perform well into late autumn. Its slow-bolting nature ensures a consistent harvest throughout warmer weather. Ideal for salads, garnishes, or as a decorative and tasty addition to any meal. Allowing plants to go to seed encourages self-seeding, ensuring an abundant future harvest in your garden.

Where Can You Grow Green Curled Lettuce?
This lettuce thrives in Zones 3-9, preferring fertile, well-drained soil and cool growing conditions. It does particularly well in coastal areas with mild climates and consistent moisture.

History and Historical Uses
Green Curled Lettuce is a favourite heirloom lettuce type known for its reliable productivity, excellent flavour, and adaptability to cooler growing conditions. Since its establishment in our gardens in 2008, it has become a steadfast variety, loved by gardeners for its robust nature and ease of cultivation.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Direct sow in early spring or autumn; suitable for winter growing in sheltered areas.
Zones 5-7: Sow seeds directly outdoors in spring after frost or in late summer for a fall crop.
Zones 3-4: Start seeds indoors and transplant outdoors after the last frost; good for spring and autumn planting.

How to Grow and Harvest Green Curled Lettuce

  • Planting: Sow seeds thinly 6mm (¼in) deep, spacing plants 20-30cm (8-12in) apart.
  • Watering: Maintain even moisture for best growth; avoid letting soil dry out.
  • Harvesting: Pick outer leaves as needed or harvest whole heads when mature.
  • Maintenance: Provide partial shade in hot weather to delay bolting and extend harvests.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

  • Allow Plants to Bolt: Let selected plants flower and produce seed stalks.
  • Harvest Seed: Once seed heads turn fluffy and dry, collect seeds before dispersal.
  • Dry and Clean: Spread seeds in a cool, airy location to fully dry before storage.
  • Store: Keep in an airtight container in a cool, dark place; seeds remain viable for up to 5 years.
