About Opium Poppy
Opium Poppies are a striking addition to any garden, with tall stems topped by bright scarlet blooms featuring dramatic black bases. A traditional favourite in classic English country gardens, these poppies are easy to grow and drought-tolerant once established. While the name can raise eyebrows, the seeds produced by these ornamental varieties contain no active compounds and are widely used in baking. After flowering, the seed heads dry beautifully, making them a popular addition to wreaths and dried floral arrangements.
Where Can You Grow Opium Poppy?
Well-suited for Zones 3–9, these poppies prefer full sun and well-drained soil. They thrive in garden beds, borders, and wildflower meadows, requiring minimal care once established. Avoid overwatering to maintain healthy plants and vibrant blooms.
History and Historical Uses
Originally from southeastern Europe and western Asia, Papaver somniferum has long been grown for ornamental, culinary, and medicinal purposes. While its narcotic properties have led to strict regulation our ornamental strains are commonly grown for seed and flowers, which are safe and widely used in gardens and baking traditions around the world. The seeds are a nutritious and flavourful addition to breads, cakes, and pastries.
