About Rockwell Bush Bean
Rockwell Bush Bean is a rare heirloom variety originally grown in Coupeville, Washington by pioneer farmer Elisha Rockwell in the 1800s. Celebrated for its early germination in cool soils and dependable performance in temperate regions, this bean is a great choice for coastal gardeners. The green pods are tender and flavourful when picked young, and the mature dried beans cook up with a rich, creamy texture that makes them a favourite in soups and hearty dishes.

Where Can You Grow Rockwell Bush Bean?
Best suited to Zones 3–9, Rockwell thrives in well-drained soil with full sun. Its early-start capability makes it an excellent variety for cool springs and shorter seasons.

History and Historical Uses
This heirloom variety has been cherished by generations of Pacific Northwest growers. Prized for its dual-purpose use, it has a strong regional history and continues to be valued for its ability to produce both fresh green beans and flavourful dried beans in a range of growing conditions.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Direct sow in mid-spring for best results.
Zones 5-7: Sow directly after last frost; mulching helps retain soil warmth.
Zones 3-4: Start indoors and transplant after risk of frost has passed.

How to Grow and Harvest Rockwell Bush Bean

Planting: Direct sow 2.5cm (1in) deep and 10cm (4in) apart in rows 45-60cm (18-24in) apart.
