Seed the Change!
Seeds of Diversity Canada estimates that nearly 75% of vegetable varieties have disappeared. 25% of native plants are at risk and diversity in flower gardens is shrinking.
We are working to restore the biodiversity that was once common in gardens, farms, and nature around Canada!

About Shelling Pea
Shelling peas are a favourite garden classic, grown for their plump, sweet green peas encased in firm pods. Unlike snap or snow peas, these are harvested when fully mature, then shelled and enjoyed fresh, steamed, or cooked in savoury dishes. These tall, climbing plants are vigorous and productive, and also offer edible tendrils, blossoms, and young pods for early season greens. With their delicious taste and generous harvest, shelling peas are an essential in any home garden.
Where Can You Grow Shelling Pea?
Shelling peas grow best in Zones 3–9 and prefer cool-season conditions with full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. They benefit from early sowing and thrive in spring and fall gardens. Provide a sturdy trellis or fence for the vines to climb.
History and Historical Uses
Peas have been cultivated for thousands of years, originally grown as a dried legume crop before sweet green varieties gained popularity in culinary use. In many cultures, they have long been a source of protein and nutrients in early spring. Shelling peas remain a cherished kitchen garden vegetable for their rich taste and ease of growing.
Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Direct sow in late winter through early spring and again in early autumn for multiple harvests.
Zones 5-7: Sow directly in early spring once soil is workable; a fall crop can be attempted in mild years.
Zones 3-4: Sow as soon as the soil can be worked; mulch if a cold snap is expected after planting.
How to Grow and Harvest Shelling Pea
Planting: Sow seeds 2.5cm (1in) deep, spaced 5cm (2in) apart in rows 20–30cm (8–12in) apart.
Watering: Keep soil moist but not soggy; water deeply during flowering and pod set.
Harvesting: Pick pods when fully plump but before they dry out; shell immediately for best flavour.
Maintenance: Provide trellising or netting for vines to climb; mulch to conserve moisture and reduce weeds.
Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply
Allow to Mature: Leave a few pods on the plant until they dry out and turn brown.
Harvest Seeds: Pick fully dried pods and shell peas from within.
Dry and Store: Allow seeds to air dry for several days before storing.
Store: Keep in an airtight container in a cool, dark place; seeds remain viable for 3–5 years.
