Seed the Change!

Seeds of Diversity Canada estimates that nearly 75% of vegetable varieties have disappeared. 25% of native plants are at risk and diversity in flower gardens is shrinking.

We are working to restore the biodiversity that was once common in gardens, farms, and nature around Canada!

About Snap Pea Mix
Sometimes gardening mishaps result in magic—like this unique and delicious Snap Pea Mix! In one growing season, we planted three snap pea varieties—Sugar Ann, Sugar Ann II, and a purple-podded type. But a few garden tags went astray, and the plants cross-pollinated and mingled beautifully. The result? A limited-edition Metchosin Farm Original blend with crunchy, sweet pods in a mix of colours and forms. A great choice for gardeners who love a bit of variety and surprise in the pea patch!

Where Can You Grow Snap Pea Mix?
Snap peas thrive in Zones 3–9 and perform best in cool seasons. Choose a full sun to part-shade location with rich, well-drained soil. Ideal for raised beds, vertical gardens, and containers with support.

History and Historical Uses
Snap peas are a relatively modern development, bred from older shelling and snow pea types to produce tender, edible pods with a sweet flavour and crisp texture. Now a garden staple, snap peas are beloved for both raw snacking and cooking.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Direct sow from early spring through early summer for extended harvest.
Zones 5-7: Sow outdoors as soon as soil can be worked; repeat plantings every few weeks.
Zones 3-4: Start early indoors and transplant; mulch well for spring warmth.

How to Grow and Harvest Snap Pea Mix
Planting: Sow 2.5cm (1in) deep and 5cm (2in) apart in rows or along a trellis.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, especially during flowering.
Harvesting: Pick pods when they are plump and still tender for best texture.
Maintenance: Provide netting or support for climbing varieties; succession sow for ongoing harvest.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply
Select Healthy Plants: Let some pods mature fully and dry on the plant.
Harvest Pods: Collect when pods are brown and seeds rattle inside.
Dry and Store: Shell and dry seeds thoroughly; store in a cool, dry place.
Store: Properly stored pea seeds can remain viable for 3–5 years.
