About Stinging Nettle

A hardy perennial herb in the mint family, valued for its rich nutrient content and medicinal properties. High in minerals and vitamins, nettle is traditionally used for anti-inflammatory remedies and as a natural health booster. Its versatility makes it perfect for teas, soups, or steamed greens. The seeds are a nutritious, nutty addition to recipes.

Easy to grow, nettle thrives in rich, moist soil and can be cultivated in garden beds, large planter pots, or natural areas. If left to mature, its stems can be harvested for their durable fibres, suitable for making cordage or other crafts.

Companion plants like comfrey and yarrow pair well with nettle, enhancing soil health and attracting beneficial insects.

Where Can You Grow Stinging Nettle

Stinging nettle grows well in Zones 3-9. It thrives in rich, moist soils with partial to full sun. This resilient plant is ideal for gardeners seeking a low-maintenance herb that supports both health and sustainability.

History and Historical Uses

Nettle has been used for centuries in traditional medicine, food, and textiles. Ancient cultures prized nettle for its nutrient-rich leaves and seeds, using it to create mineral-rich teas, treat ailments, and produce strong, durable fibres. Its historical versatility continues to make nettle a valuable addition to home gardens today.

Canadian Zone Information

  • Zones 8-9: Plant roots in early spring or autumn for best results.
  • Zones 5-7: Plant in spring once the ground is workable or in autumn with mulch to protect roots.
  • Zones 3-4: Mulch heavily after planting to protect roots from freezing temperatures.

How to Grow and Harvest Stinging Nettle

  1. Planting: Plant roots flat, 3-4cm (1-1.5in) below the soil surface in a rich, moist area.
  2. Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
  3. Harvesting: Harvest young stems in early spring, leaving 2-3 buds for regrowth.
  4. Preservation: Eat steamed or dry the leaves for a mineral-rich tea. Allow mature stems to be stripped for fibres.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

  1. Allow to Flower and Seed: Let plants fully mature, producing seed heads.
  2. Harvest Seeds: Once seeds darken and begin to loosen, cut the seed heads and collect them in a paper bag.
  3. Dry and Clean: Spread seed heads in a well-ventilated area to dry for 1-2 weeks. Rub the heads to release seeds and separate them from the chaff.
  4. Store: Store dried seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Properly stored seeds remain viable for up to 2 years.
