About Delphinium

Delphinium (Delphinium spp.) is a must-have for ornamental, pollinator, and cut flower gardens, producing towering spikes of vibrant blooms in shades of blue, lavender, and mauve. These elegant perennials bring height and drama to garden borders and flourish in cool, moist conditions with well-amended soil.

Once established, delphiniums are hardy and long-lived, though they benefit from well-draining soil to prevent winter root rot. Their tall stems and bold blossoms attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, while also making stunning floral arrangements.

Where Can You Grow Delphinium?

Delphiniums thrive in Zones 3-8, preferring full sun to partial shade and rich, well-drained soil. They are ideal for cottage gardens, perennial borders, and cut flower beds. In warmer climates, they perform best with afternoon shade and regular watering.

History and Historical Uses

Native to mountainous regions of the Northern Hemisphere, delphiniums have been cultivated for centuries for their ornamental beauty. They were traditionally used in English gardens for their towering presence, and their brilliant hues continue to make them a favourite in modern landscapes.

Canadian Zone Information

Zones 8: Direct sow in autumn or early spring for strong, early blooms.
Zones 5-7: Start seeds indoors in late winter or direct sow in early spring.
Zones 3-4: Direct sow in spring or mulch heavily over winter for root protection.

How to Grow and Harvest Delphinium

  1. Planting: Sow seeds 3mm (1/8in) deep, spacing plants 30-60cm (12-24in) apart.
  2. Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, particularly in dry periods.
  3. Staking: Tall varieties may require staking to prevent breakage in windy conditions.
  4. Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to prolong blooming and encourage a second flush.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

  1. Allow to Flower and Seed: Let some plants fully mature and form seed heads.
  2. Harvest Seeds: Once seed pods dry and turn brown, collect them before they split open.
  3. Dry and Clean: Spread seeds on a towel to fully dry before storing.
  4. Store: Keep seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Properly stored seeds remain viable for up to 3 years.
