Rudbeckia

Black-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia)

Rudbeckia hirta

Also known as Black-Eyed Susan, Rudbeckia is a cheerful and hardy perennial known for its vivid yellow flowers with contrasting dark centres. Blooming from mid-summer well into fall, this plant thrives in both garden beds and containers, bringing long-lasting colour and structure to your space. It is a great choice for low-maintenance landscapes and pollinator gardens, attracting bees and butterflies throughout the blooming season.

Where Can You Grow Rudbeckia?
Best suited to Zones 3–9, Rudbeckia grows well in full sun and tolerates a range of soil types. It performs particularly well in moderately dry or well-drained soils and is an excellent choice for borders, wildflower meadows, or container gardens.

History and Historical Uses
Native to North America, Rudbeckia has long been valued by Indigenous peoples and herbalists for its potential medicinal properties, especially in supporting immune health. It also holds a firm place in ornamental gardens due to its reliability, beauty, and role in promoting pollinator activity.
