2026 Backyard Basketry Workshops!

We are teaming up with extraordinary local weaver Anne Richmond to bring you two basketry workshops! Learn to create beautiful and practical works of art with easy-to-find materials, some of which may be in your own backyard.

WORKSHOP 1: Baskets with Invasives

Ever wish there was something useful that could be done with all that invasive Scotch broom? Join us to learn how to weave with it! In this beginner-friendly workshop we will learn the foundations of basketry by making an easy coil basket. BONUS: Enjoy a demonstration of stinging nettle cordage - a traditional practice of turning another abundant plant into functional cord.

WORKSHOP 2: Tension Willow Tray

Take the next step in basketry by working with willow! In this workshop we will use local, wild-harvested willow to create a tension tray, a method that uses physics to hold a beautiful tray together. These trays are beautiful accessories in your home, useful as serving platters or hot plates. Please bring a pair of secateurs if you own one! BONUS: Learn how to propagate and care for your own willow to have endless basketry materials at home!
