Seeds and Forage

At Metchosin Farm we understand the importance of seeds. Nothing can be grown without them. They are also an important food source for many small creatures, including the littlest of our furry pet friends.

We are dedicated to providing everyone with 100% Canadian, Diverse, Organic, Locally Adapted, and Open Pollinated seeds. The quality result of these commitments means better growth and yields for you.

the Forager Pet is our spin-off from conversations with small pet owners. We heard people were struggling to find organic and locally grown Forage and Enclosure Enrichment. So we did something about that!

Locally Adapted

The majority of seeds and small pet forage/enclosure enrichment is grown a long way from Canada.

Locally grown and adapted seeds have the advantage of being well adapted to the local climate, pests, soils and other conditions.  Locally grown seeds are also much more likely to survive over the winter and self-seed in the garden.

Small Pet Forage and Enclosure Enrichment sourced in Canada supports the cultivation of a local market and industry that supports farmers to get premium and high-quality products to you.

Organic Certified

Our seeds come from plants grown without chemicals, pesticides or fertilizers.  By choosing our seeds, you know that the plants are genetically ready for your gardening and farming needs.

Don't rely on seeds that need chemicals to survive or lose their resilience to basic conditions like droughts, poor soils, or pests.  You are buying healthier plants that are easier to grow.

Small Pets deserve better. Organic certification ensures that your furry friends are not consuming nasty chemicals and pesticides that are far more likely to bio-accumulate in their little bodies.

Open Pollinated

All of our seeds are Open Pollinated, as opposed to Hybrids.  That means that anybody who grows from our seeds can save the seeds from those plants and get the same variety year after year. We strongly encourage our customers to become part of a growing community of seed savers, maintaining the diversity of our food plants one garden at a time.

Our Seed Safe Pledge

We pledge that we do not knowingly buy or sell genetically engineered seeds or plants. We ensure stable genetics on all new varieties. The mechanical transfer of genetic material outside of natural reproductive methods and between genera, families or kingdoms poses great biological risks, as well as economic, political and cultural threats.
