Seed the Change!
Seeds of Diversity Canada estimates that nearly 75% of vegetable varieties have disappeared. 25% of native plants are at risk and diversity in flower gardens is shrinking.
We are working to restore the biodiversity that was once common in gardens, farms, and nature around Canada!

About African Marigold
African Marigolds, or better known as Aztec Marigolds are bold, cheerful annuals known for their large, dense flower heads and vibrant colours. These sturdy plants grow tall and upright, adding vertical interest to the garden while thriving in a variety of soil types and climates. A classic choice for ornamental gardens, the blooms are also edible and attract beneficial insects, including bees and butterflies. Long-lasting in bouquets and flower arrangements, African Marigolds are also traditionally grown as companion plants to deter pests in vegetable gardens.
Where Can You Grow African Marigold?
Best grown in Zones 3-9. Prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Ideal for flower borders, cottage gardens, and mixed ornamental beds. Grows well in containers and is drought-tolerant once established.
History and Historical Uses
Originally native to Mexico and Central America, African Marigolds (Tagetes erecta) have been cultivated and hybridized for centuries. Despite their name, they are not African in origin. The plant has long been valued in both ceremonial and practical uses—serving in traditional medicine, as natural pest control, and as colourful additions to cultural festivals and altars.
