Apple Mint

Apple Mint Rootstock

Mentha suaveolens

Apple Mint is a versatile perennial herb with soft, grey-green fuzzy leaves and a unique fruity flavour reminiscent of apples with a mild minty undertone. Perfect for teas, salads, and garnishes, Apple Mint is as practical in the kitchen as it is beautiful in the garden.

This variety thrives in containers or garden beds and grows up to 1m (3ft) tall when flowering. Its blossoms attract bees and other pollinators, making it an excellent choice for eco-friendly gardening. Like other mints, it spreads rapidly if not contained, so planting in a pot or controlled area is recommended.

Where Can You Grow Apple Mint

Apple Mint thrives in Zones 3-9, preferring rich, well-drained soil with partial to full sun. It is perfect for container gardening or as part of a pollinator-friendly garden bed.

History and Historical Uses

Apple Mint has been cultivated for centuries for its culinary, medicinal, and ornamental uses. Known for its calming and digestive properties, it has been used traditionally in teas and remedies to soothe the stomach and relieve stress. Its mild flavour and beautiful foliage continue to make it a popular choice among gardeners and chefs.

Canadian Zone Information

  • Zones 8-9: Plant roots in early spring or autumn for rapid establishment.
  • Zones 5-7: Plant in spring after the last frost or in early autumn with mulch for protection.
  • Zones 3-4: Mulch heavily after planting in spring or autumn to protect roots from winter freezes.

How to Grow and Harvest Apple Mint

  1. Planting: Plant roots flat, 3-4cm (1-1.5in) below the soil surface in a pot or amended garden soil. Space plants 30-45cm (12-18in) apart.
  2. Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, but avoid waterlogging.
  3. Harvesting: Harvest leaves regularly for fresh use, encouraging bushier growth. Pinch off flowers if not desired.
  4. Control Growth: Plant in pots or use barriers to contain spreading rhizomes.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

Apple Mint is primarily propagated through root divisions, but seeds can be saved with care:

  1. Allow to Flower and Seed: Let plants flower fully, and allow seed heads to dry on the plant.
  2. Collect Seeds: Once the seed heads are dry, cut them and place them in a paper bag.
  3. Dry and Clean: Allow the seed heads to dry for 1-2 weeks, then shake or crush gently to release the seeds. Separate seeds from chaff.
  4. Store: Store seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Seeds remain viable for up to 2 years.

Care Instructions

Nettles and Mints (Shallow Rootstock)

Storage: If you cannot plant immediately, open the bag for ventilation and store in the back of your fridge. Check roots every week and plant before they show any signs of mould.

Planting: In Coastal British Columbia, your rootstock can be planted upon receipt in a large planter pot, garden bed, or naturalized area. Nettles and mints appreciate rich, moist soil. Roots should be planted flat in loosely worked soil amended with compost. Plant with any sprouts facing upwards and any emerging roots down. Cover with 3-4cm (1in) of soil and water in well. Add a light mulch of leaves or other similar material to prevent roots from freezing solid. If planting in a naturalized area, clear other competing plants away from your roots so they receive adequate light to establish.
