About Black Hollyhock
Black Hollyhock (Alcea rosea) is a classic feature of traditional English flower gardens, offering towering stalks covered with striking single blooms in shades of deep purple-brown to almost true black. This drought-tolerant perennial blooms throughout the summer, creating a dramatic, elegant backdrop in mixed borders or as a standalone feature.
Growing up to 2m (6.5ft) tall, Black Hollyhock is a pollinator magnet, attracting bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Though short-lived, these hollyhocks reseed easily, ensuring their presence in your garden for years to come.
Where Can You Grow Black Hollyhock
Thriving in Zones 3-9, Black Hollyhock prefers full sun and well-drained soil. It adapts well to cottage gardens, borders, or even naturalised settings.
History and Historical Uses
Hollyhocks have been cultivated for centuries, originating in Asia and spreading through Europe. Valued for their ornamental beauty, they have long been a favourite in English gardens, symbolising ambition and the beauty of summer.
Canadian Zone Information
- Zones 8-9: Sow seeds directly in early spring or autumn for strong growth.
- Zones 5-7: Start seeds indoors in late winter or sow directly in spring.
-
Zones 3-4: Sow seeds in spring or mulch heavily if sowing in autumn to protect seedlings.
How to Grow and Harvest Black Hollyhock
- Planting: Sow seeds 0.5-1cm (1/4-1/2in) deep, spacing plants 30-60cm (12-24in) apart.
- Watering: Water regularly during establishment, then reduce frequency as plants mature.
- Deadheading: Remove spent blooms to encourage more flowers or allow to go to seed for natural reseeding.
- Support: Provide staking in windy areas to support tall flower stalks.
Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply
- Allow to Flower and Seed: Let some blooms fully mature and form seed pods.
- Harvest Seeds: Once pods turn brown and dry, collect them before they split.
- Dry and Clean: Spread pods in a well-ventilated area to dry. Gently break them open to release seeds.
- Store: Store seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Properly stored seeds remain viable for 2-3 years.
