Where Can You Grow Bush Bean Mix

This mix thrives in Zones 3-9, preferring full sun and well-drained soil. Compact plants are suitable for traditional garden beds, raised beds, or patio containers, making them adaptable to various growing spaces.

History and Historical Uses

Bush beans have been cultivated for centuries as a reliable source of nutrition, protein, and flavour. Valued for their quick growth and diverse uses, they remain a staple in kitchens and gardens worldwide.

Canadian Zone Information

  • Zones 8-9: Sow seeds directly outdoors in early spring for a continuous summer harvest.
  • Zones 5-7: Plant seeds outdoors in late spring after the last frost.
  • Zones 3-4: Start seeds indoors in spring for an earlier harvest or sow directly outdoors after the last frost.

How to Grow and Harvest Bush Bean Mix

  1. Planting: Sow seeds 2.5cm (1in) deep and 7-10cm (3-4in) apart in rows spaced 45-60cm (18-24in).
  2. Watering: Keep soil evenly moist during germination and growth. Avoid waterlogging.
  3. Harvesting: Pick beans when pods are young and tender for fresh eating or allow them to mature for drying. Frequent picking encourages continued production.
  4. Maintenance: Bush beans require minimal care and do not need trellising or staking.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

  1. Allow Pods to Dry: Leave some pods on the plant until they are fully mature and dry.
  2. Harvest Seeds: Collect dried pods and remove the beans inside.
  3. Clean and Store: Spread seeds on a clean towel or screen to dry further. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Properly stored seeds remain viable for up to 5 years.
