About Catnip

Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is a versatile member of the mint family, loved for its dual-purpose appeal. While it acts as a stimulant for cats, providing endless entertainment, it has a calming effect on humans, making it perfect for relaxing night-time teas.

Growing to 1m (3ft) tall, this hardy perennial features soft, fuzzy leaves and delicate flowers, adding charm to herb gardens or mixed borders. Catnip is drought-tolerant and deer-resistant, making it a low-maintenance choice for gardeners.

Where Can You Grow Catnip

Catnip thrives in Zones 3-9, preferring full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. It is ideal for herb gardens, pollinator-friendly spaces, or containers to control its spread.

History and Historical Uses

Native to Europe and Asia, catnip has been used for centuries in herbal medicine. Traditionally brewed as a tea, it was valued for its calming effects on humans, while its unique appeal to cats made it a popular garden herb for pet owners.

Canadian Zone Information

  • Zones 8-9: Sow seeds directly in early spring or autumn.
  • Zones 5-7: Start seeds indoors in late winter and transplant after the last frost.
  • Zones 3-4: Sow seeds in early spring and mulch heavily to protect plants in colder winters.

How to Grow and Harvest Catnip

  1. Planting: Sow seeds 3mm (1/8in) deep, spacing plants 30-45cm (12-18in) apart.
  2. Watering: Water regularly during establishment, but the plant is drought-tolerant once mature.
  3. Pruning: Regularly trim plants to encourage bushy growth and prevent excessive spreading.
  4. Harvesting: Pick leaves and flowers throughout the growing season for teas or cat treats.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

  1. Allow to Flower and Seed: Let some flowers remain on the plant to develop seed heads.
  2. Harvest Seeds: Once seed heads dry and turn brown, collect them before they shatter.
  3. Dry and Clean: Spread seed heads in a ventilated area to dry, then gently crush to release seeds.
  4. Store: Store seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Properly stored seeds remain viable for up to 5 years.
