About Cosmos Mix

Cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus and Cosmos sulphureus) is a stunning, easy-to-grow annual known for its long-lasting, vibrant blooms and graceful, airy foliage. This mix produces a variety of colours, including pink, orange, and white, adding charm and movement to flower beds and wildflower gardens. With tall, elegant stems reaching up to 2m, cosmos makes a striking addition to pollinator gardens and cut flower arrangements.

These hardy plants thrive in dry conditions and require minimal care, making them perfect for low-maintenance landscapes. Regular deadheading or picking encourages continuous blooms from summer through autumn.

Where Can You Grow Cosmos Mix?

Cosmos thrives in Zones 3-9, preferring full sun and well-drained soil. It is ideal for wildflower meadows, cottage gardens, and cut flower beds, and also grows well in large containers.

History and Historical Uses

Native to Mexico and Central America, cosmos has long been cultivated for its ornamental beauty and ability to attract pollinators. Traditionally grown in cottage gardens and wildflower meadows, its drought tolerance and long bloom time have made it a favourite among gardeners worldwide.

Canadian Zone Information

Zones 8-9: Direct sow in autumn or early spring for an early display of blooms.
Zones 5-7: Start seeds indoors in late winter or direct sow in spring after the last frost.
Zones 3-4: Direct sow in spring once soil has warmed, or start indoors for an extended bloom period.

How to Grow and Harvest Cosmos Mix

  1. Planting: Sow seeds 3mm (1/8in) deep, spacing plants 30-45cm (12-18in) apart.
  2. Watering: Keep soil lightly moist until seedlings establish; cosmos thrives in drier conditions once mature.
  3. Harvesting:
    • Pick flowers regularly to stimulate new blooms.
    • Cut stems for bouquets when flowers are fully open for long-lasting arrangements.
  4. Maintenance: Allow some flowers to set seed for self-seeding and natural regrowth next season.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

  1. Allow to Flower and Seed: Let some blooms dry on the plant to form seed heads.
  2. Harvest Seeds: Once flower heads turn brown, gently collect and remove seeds.
  3. Dry and Clean: Spread seeds on a towel to fully dry before storage.
  4. Store: Keep seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Properly stored seeds remain viable for up to 3 years.
