About Salmon Berry
Salmon Berry is a hardy perennial shrub native to the coastal forests of British Columbia. Blooming in April, its dark pink flowers are among the earliest to appear in the spring garden, making it an important food source for early pollinators and hummingbirds. By June, the flowers give way to clusters of juicy berries that range in colour from pale orange to deep red. The fruit is mildly sweet and best enjoyed fresh, though also used in jams and traditional dishes.

Where Can You Grow Salmon Berry?
Well-suited for Zones 5–9, Salmon Berry thrives in moist soils and part shade, making it ideal for woodland edges, damp slopes, or riparian zones. Once established, it spreads to form dense thickets and is a great addition to native planting schemes.

History and Historical Uses
Salmon Berry has long been harvested by Indigenous peoples across the Pacific Northwest, with both the berries and young shoots valued as early-season food. The berries were often eaten fresh or with other fruits, and young shoots were sometimes peeled and eaten raw. Its early bloom and fruiting make it a key part of seasonal cycles for people, pollinators, and wildlife alike.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Direct sow outdoors in autumn or early spring for natural cold stratification.
Zones 5-7: Cold-stratify seeds indoors for 90 days, then sow in spring.
Zone 4: Best started in pots and overwintered indoors before transplanting out in year two.

How to Grow and Harvest Salmon Berry

Planting: Sow seeds 6mm (¼in) deep in moist, well-drained soil. Cold stratification improves germination.
Watering: Prefers moist soil; water during dry spells until well established.
Harvesting: Pick berries when fully ripe in early summer.
Maintenance: Prune to manage spread if needed. Mulch annually with organic matter.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

Select Ripe Berries: Harvest from robust, mature plants.
Extract Seeds: Mash and rinse berries to remove pulp.
Dry and Store: Air dry seeds and store in a cool, dry place.
