About Eggplant Mix
Eggplant Mix (Solanum melongena) is a carefully curated selection of four distinct eggplant varieties, each offering its own stunning colours, shapes, and flavours. This mix includes:

  • Diamond Eggplant – A classic dark purple variety, highly productive and well-suited to cooler climates.
  • Listada di Gandia – A beautifully striped purple and white Italian heirloom with excellent flavour.
  • Ping Tung Eggplant – A long, slender, deep purple variety from Taiwan, known for its tender texture.
  • Rosa Bianca Eggplant – A gorgeous round variety with creamy white and rosy blush skin, famous for its rich flavour.

This mix is perfect for gardeners who want variety in both appearance and taste. Best grown in greenhouses or large patio planters, these eggplants thrive in warm conditions and will reward growers with a continuous harvest throughout the summer.

Where Can You Grow Eggplant Mix?
Eggplants grow best in Zones 4-9, preferring full sun and well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. They are ideal for raised beds, container gardening, and greenhouse growing, where they benefit from warm, sheltered conditions.

History and Historical Uses
Eggplants have been cultivated for centuries, with different regions developing unique varieties. The mix includes heritage varieties from Europe and Asia, each traditionally prized for its flavour, adaptability, and culinary versatility.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Start seeds indoors in January or February, transplant outdoors in April, and harvest from June to October.
Zones 5-7: Start seeds indoors in late February to mid-March, transplant in May, and harvest from July through September.
Zones 4: Start seeds indoors in late March or early April, transplant in late May or early June, and harvest from mid-July to early September.

How to Grow and Harvest Eggplant Mix

  • Planting: Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost, transplant outdoors once the soil is warm.
  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, ensuring good drainage to prevent root rot.
  • Support: Use staking or cages for larger varieties to support heavy fruit production.
  • Fertilisation: Use compost-rich soil and fertilise regularly for best growth.
  • Harvesting: Pick fruit when fully coloured and glossy for the best texture and flavour.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

  • Choose the Best Fruit: Select fully ripened, healthy eggplants for seed saving.
  • Extract the Seeds: Cut open the fruit and scoop out the seeds into a bowl of water and blend.
  • Fermentation: Let seeds ferment for 2-5 days, stirring occasionally to separate viable seeds.
  • Rinse and Dry: Strain, rinse well, and spread on a towel or screen to fully dry.
  • Store: Keep seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Properly stored seeds remain viable for up to 5 years.
