About European Blue Vervain
European Blue Vervain (Verbena officinalis) is a hardy, low-maintenance perennial valued for both its medicinal properties and ecological benefits. Small, non-showy flowers bloom on erect stems, rising above a base of deep green, toothed leaves. Though modest in appearance, this plant is a magnet for pollinators and thrives in a variety of growing conditions.
Resilient and drought-tolerant once established, European Blue Vervain is a great choice for garden borders, flowerbeds, and naturalised plantings. It has been traditionally used in herbal medicine for centuries, often recognised for its calming and digestive properties.
Where Can You Grow European Blue Vervain?
This perennial herb grows well in Zones 4-9, preferring full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. It is a great addition to wildflower meadows, pollinator gardens, and medicinal herb beds.
History and Historical Uses
Native to Europe and Asia, European Blue Vervain has been used for centuries in herbal remedies. Historically, it was believed to have calming and anti-inflammatory properties and was commonly used in infusions, tinctures, and poultices.
