About Feverfew
Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) is a hardy, self-seeding perennial in the daisy family, known for its decorative white and yellow flowers and medicinal uses. With fragrant, citrus-scented leaves, feverfew has long been cultivated for its herbal properties and as an attractive addition to flower gardens.

Traditionally used in herbal medicine for fevers, migraines, and inflammatory conditions, this plant is also an excellent pollinator attractor and pairs well in both herbal and ornamental garden beds.

Where Can You Grow Feverfew?
Feverfew thrives in Zones 4-9, preferring full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. It is well-suited for garden borders, wildflower meadows, and medicinal herb gardens.

History and Historical Uses
Native to Europe and Asia, feverfew has been widely used in traditional medicine for centuries. Known for its anti-inflammatory and fever-reducing properties, it has remained a popular herbal remedy and a valuable garden plant.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Direct sow in autumn or early spring for early blooms.
Zones 5-7: Start seeds indoors in late winter, or direct sow in spring after the last frost.
Zones 4: Direct sow in spring or mulch plants for winter protection.

How to Grow and Harvest Feverfew

  • Planting: Sow seeds 3mm (1/8in) deep, spacing plants 20-30cm (8-12in) apart.
  • Watering: Keep soil moist until established, then water occasionally.
  • Harvesting:
    • Pick leaves and flowers throughout the season for fresh use.
    • Dry leaves and flowers for long-term herbal storage.
  • Maintenance: Trim back spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming and allow some plants to self-seed.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

  • Allow to Flower and Seed: Leave some plants to fully mature and develop seed heads.
  • Harvest Seeds: Once seed heads dry and turn brown, collect them before dispersal.
  • Dry and Clean: Separate seeds from husks and allow them to fully dry.
  • Store: Keep seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Properly stored seeds remain viable for up to 3 years.
