Goldenrod

Goldenrod

Solidago candensis

Goldenrod is a hardy, long-lived perennial known for its tall, showy yellow blooms that provide essential late-season nectar for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Thriving in dry, sandy, or poor soils, this low-maintenance plant is an excellent choice for wildflower meadows, borders, and erosion control. Spreading through tough rhizomatous roots, goldenrod establishes quickly and can be easily divided to expand or manage its growth. It is drought-tolerant once established and adds height, structure, and a burst of golden colour to any landscape.

Where Can You Grow Goldenrod?
Goldenrod thrives in Zones 3-9 and is well-suited to meadows, borders, and open spaces with full sun. It tolerates a range of soil conditions, from sandy to clay-rich, and requires little maintenance.

History and Historical Uses
A native plant of North America, goldenrod has been used medicinally and ecologically for centuries. Indigenous peoples traditionally used it for respiratory ailments and inflammation, while early settlers recognized its value in soil stabilization and natural dye production. Despite its reputation, goldenrod is not a significant cause of hay fever, as its pollen is too heavy to be airborne.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Direct sow in early spring or autumn for best establishment.
Zones 5-7: Direct sow in spring after the last frost or plant divisions in autumn.
Zones 3-4: Best grown from transplants or divisions in early spring.

How to Grow and Harvest Goldenrod

  • Planting: Sow seeds on the surface of moist soil, lightly pressing them in.
  • Watering: Water moderately until established; drought tolerant once mature.
  • Dividing: Dig and divide rhizomes every 3-4 years to manage spread.
  • Harvesting: Cut flowers in full bloom for fresh arrangements or drying.
  • Maintenance: Remove spent flowers to prolong blooming or leave for wildlife.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

  • Allow Flowers to Go to Seed: Leave blooms on the plant until seed heads dry.
  • Harvest and Dry: Collect seed heads when fully dried and brown.
  • Separate Seeds: Remove chaff and store seeds in a dry, cool place.
  • Store: Keep in an airtight container for up to 3 years.
