About Green Orach
Green Orach (Atriplex hortensis) is an easy-to-grow annual, highly valued for its soft, tender leaves that provide a tasty alternative to spinach. Also known as ‘mountain spinach’, its young leaves add delicious flavour and texture to salads, while mature leaves are perfect for cooking in soups, lasagna, quiches, and other spinach dishes. Unlike traditional spinach, Green Orach thrives in warmer conditions, making it a great summer green that resists bolting. Plants grow tall, reaching up to 1.5m, and readily self-seed, providing a reliable supply for years to come.
Where Can You Grow Green Orach?
Green Orach grows well in Zones 3-9, preferring full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. It tolerates heat and drought, making it an excellent choice for summer gardens.
History and Historical Uses
Green Orach has a long history as a nutritious leafy vegetable, cultivated since ancient times across Europe, Asia, and North America. Historically grown as a staple green, it provided essential nutrients during warmer months when other leafy greens struggled. Its tolerance to heat and its prolific self-seeding nature made it popular in traditional kitchen gardens.
Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Direct sow seeds outdoors in early spring and again in autumn for extended harvests.
Zones 5-7: Direct sow in spring after the risk of frost; sow again in late summer for fall crops.
Zones 3-4: Start seeds indoors in early spring or sow directly outdoors after the last frost.
How to Grow and Harvest Green Orach
- Planting: Sow seeds 1cm (½in) deep, spacing plants 30cm (12in) apart.
- Watering: Keep soil moderately moist, particularly during dry spells, for best leaf quality.
- Harvesting: Begin harvesting young leaves as early as 30 days; mature leaves are excellent for cooking.
- Maintenance: Trim regularly to encourage new leaf growth; allow some plants to seed for next season.
Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply
- Allow Seed Formation: Leave select plants to fully mature and produce seeds.
- Harvest Seeds: Collect seeds once seed clusters turn brown and dry.
- Dry and Store: Dry seeds completely, then store in airtight containers in a cool, dark place. Seeds remain viable up to 5 years.
