Growing Information

About Green Zebra Tomato
Green Zebra Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is a beautiful heirloom variety known for its striking, medium-sized fruits displaying vibrant green stripes over a golden-green background. Noted for its unusually sweet and tangy flavour, this tomato challenges expectations, proving green tomatoes can indeed be sweet! It is highly productive, yielding uniformly shaped fruits that resist cracking and ripen reliably off the vine. Green Zebra's semi-determinate growth habit makes it suitable for smaller gardens and container planting.

Where Can You Grow Green Zebra Tomato?
Green Zebra Tomato grows well in Zones 3-9, preferring full sun, fertile soil, and good drainage. It performs exceptionally in raised beds, containers, and greenhouses.

History and Historical Uses
Developed in the 1980s by tomato breeder Tom Wagner, Green Zebra quickly became a beloved heirloom due to its unique colour, flavour, and excellent garden performance. It has since become a favourite among chefs and home gardeners, prized for both fresh eating and culinary creations.

Zones 3-4: Grow in greenhouse or containers; start seeds indoors early for best results.

How to Grow and Harvest Green Zebra Tomato

  • Planting: Sow seeds 6mm (¼in) deep indoors; transplant 60cm (24in) apart after frost.
  • Watering: Maintain even moisture, especially during fruit development.
  • Support: Stake or cage plants to support heavy fruit loads.
  • Harvesting: Pick fruits when slightly soft and showing gold-green colour with stripes.
  • Ripening: Tomatoes continue ripening after picking, becoming sweeter off the vine.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

  • Select Best Fruits: Choose healthy, fully ripe fruits with desired characteristics.
  • Extract Seeds: Scoop seeds into water, allowing them to ferment for 2-3 days to remove gel coating.
  • Rinse and Dry: Thoroughly rinse seeds, then dry on paper towel or screens completely.
  • Store: Store dry seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Seeds remain viable for up to 5 years.
