Hulless Oats (Avena nuda) produce grains that separate easily from their husks, simplifying harvesting and processing. Growing between 2-5ft tall, this variety prefers full sun and well-drained soil, making it ideal for garden plots and small-scale farming. Harvest grains by cutting seed heads from mature stalks, drying them thoroughly, then threshing to separate the oats from the chaff. Where Can You Grow Hulless Oats?

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Direct sow in early spring; harvest in late summer.
Zones 5-7: Sow directly outdoors as soon as soil is workable in spring; harvest late summer.
Zones 3-4: Seed directly outdoors in early spring; ensure adequate moisture throughout the growing season.

How to Grow and Harvest Hulless Oats

• Planting: Sow seeds 2.5cm (1in) deep, spaced about 5-10cm (2-4in) apart in rows.

• Watering: Keep plants consistently watered, especially during dry periods.

• Harvesting: Cut mature seed heads from stalks, then allow them to dry thoroughly. Beat or thresh grain heads to separate oats.

• Storage: Store fully dried oats in airtight containers away from moisture and pests.
