Lemon Cucumber

Lemon Cucumber

Cucumis sativus

Lemon Cucumber is a delightful and eye-catching heirloom variety producing small, round, yellow cucumbers about the size of an apple. Despite the name, it doesn’t taste like lemon—its flavour is mild, crisp, and refreshingly tangy with a subtle citrus twist. These cucumbers are perfect for fresh eating, adding a burst of flavour and colour to salads or lunchboxes. Their size, taste, and novelty make them a favourite for children and a great conversation starter in any garden.

Where Can You Grow Lemon Cucumber?
Lemon Cucumber thrives in Zones 3-9 in full sun and well-drained, fertile soil. It’s a great choice for raised beds, small gardens, or large containers on patios. Provide a small trellis or let it sprawl for best production.

History and Historical Uses
Believed to have originated in the 1800s in India, Lemon Cucumber was introduced to North America in the early 20th century and has remained a popular novelty crop among gardeners. Its sweet and refreshing taste makes it a great addition to raw dishes, pickling jars, and even infused waters.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Direct sow outdoors in late spring; harvest from mid-summer through autumn.
Zones 5-7: Start indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost; transplant out after danger of frost has passed.
Zones 3-4: Start indoors and grow in a greenhouse or warm microclimate for reliable production.

How to Grow and Harvest Lemon Cucumber

Planting: Sow seeds 1.5cm (½in) deep, spaced 30-45cm (12-18in) apart.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist; mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Harvesting: Pick fruit when bright yellow and 7-10cm (3-4in) across for best flavour and texture.
Maintenance: Provide support with a trellis or let plants sprawl in open beds.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

Select Mature Fruit: Leave a few cucumbers on the vine to fully ripen until soft and golden.
Harvest Seeds: Scoop seeds from overripe fruit, rinse clean of pulp, and dry on a screen or towel.
Dry and Store: Fully dry seeds before storing in a cool, dark, and dry place.
Viability: Seeds remain viable for up to 5 years when stored properly.
