Seed the Change!
Seeds of Diversity Canada estimates that nearly 75% of vegetable varieties have disappeared. 25% of native plants are at risk and diversity in flower gardens is shrinking.
We are working to restore the biodiversity that was once common in gardens, farms, and nature around Canada!

About Melon Mix
Our Melon Mix is a delicious and colourful selection of small-fruited melons chosen for their sweet flavour and ability to ripen well even in cooler coastal climates. The mix includes watermelon, cantaloupe, muskmelon and a surprise variety selected from a grocery store melon we loved in 2020. The fruits are compact, flavourful, and perfect for fresh snacking. Whether you're a seasoned grower or a curious beginner, this mix offers a fun and rewarding experience with a tasty payoff.
Where Can You Grow Melon Mix?
These melons grow best in Zones 4–9 with full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Ideal for raised beds, garden rows, and greenhouses. In cooler areas, use cloches or row covers to boost early growth and extend the season.
History and Historical Uses
Melons have been cultivated for thousands of years and prized for their sweet, refreshing flesh. This mix brings together both traditional favourites and unique selections, continuing the age-old tradition of saving and growing flavourful varieties suited to local climates.
Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Direct sow after the last frost or transplant indoor starts in late spring.
Zones 5-7: Start seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost and transplant out when soil is warm.
Zone 4: Grow in a greenhouse or under cloche to ensure fruit ripens in shorter seasons.
How to Grow and Harvest Melon Mix
Planting: Sow seeds 1.5cm (½in) deep, spaced 45-60cm (18-24in) apart in rich soil.
Watering: Water deeply and consistently, avoiding overhead watering.
Support: Provide plenty of space to sprawl or train vines vertically in compact spaces.
Harvesting: Pick melons when they easily detach from the vine and emit a sweet scent at the blossom end.
Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply
Let Fruit Ripen Fully: Choose healthy fruit and let it ripen on the vine.
Harvest Seeds: Scoop out seeds, rinse thoroughly, and ferment for 2-3 days to remove residue.
Dry and Store: Dry completely on a screen or towel; store in a cool, dark, dry place.
Viability: Seeds remain viable for up to 5 years when stored properly.
