About Miner's Lettuce
Miner's Lettuce (Claytonia perfoliata) is a delightful native plant prized for its sweet, mild flavour and succulent texture. Thriving in cool, shaded conditions, it’s one of the earliest greens to appear in the spring—sometimes as early as January on the BC coast. This annual is known for its charming round leaves with central flower stems and its ability to self-seed abundantly once established. A top choice for wild salad enthusiasts, it grows well in woodland gardens, shady corners, or as an early-season crop in raised beds.
Where Can You Grow Miner's Lettuce?
Ideal for Zones 3–9, Miner's Lettuce prefers partial to full shade and moist, well-drained soil. It is well-suited to woodland edges, shady garden beds, or under taller crops.
History and Historical Uses
Native to the West Coast of North America, Miner's Lettuce was widely consumed by early settlers and foragers as a fresh spring green rich in vitamin C—especially valued during the Gold Rush era for preventing scurvy. Traditionally used by Indigenous communities, it remains a staple wild edible in Pacific coastal gardens.
