About Mouse Melon Cucumber
Mouse Melon Cucumbers, also known as cucamelons or Mexican sour gherkins, are one of the most charming additions to the summer garden. These tiny, oblong fruits resemble miniature watermelons and grow to the size of a grape. With a fresh, crisp texture and subtle citrus-cucumber flavour, they’re perfect for tossing into salads, pickling whole, or snacking straight off the vine. The vining plants are vigorous and benefit from support for easier harvesting and improved airflow.
Where Can You Grow Mouse Melon Cucumber?
These warm-season annuals thrive in Zones 4-9. Best grown in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil and regular watering. Ideal for raised beds, patio planters, or trained up trellises and fences.
History and Historical Uses
Originally from Central America, mouse melons have been cultivated for generations in Mexico and Central America. Known for their drought resistance and ease of growth, they’ve become a beloved novelty and functional edible in gardens worldwide. Though relatively new to many Canadian growers, they’ve gained popularity for their ornamental appearance and surprisingly robust yield.
