About Pin Cushion Flower (Scabiosa)
Pin Cushion Flower, also known as Scabiosa, is a charming and low-maintenance addition to any garden. Blooming in shades of soft pinks, blues, and purples, the delicate blossoms resemble vintage pin cushions atop slender stems. These graceful plants are highly attractive to pollinators and provide a long season of blooms, making them ideal for cottage gardens, wildflower borders, or flower beds. Their long, wiry stems make them particularly well-suited for fresh bouquets and dried arrangements, adding beauty indoors and out.
Where Can You Grow Pin Cushion Flower?
Well-suited to Zones 3–9, these flowers thrive in full sun and well-drained soil. They grow beautifully in garden beds, borders, and containers, and benefit from regular deadheading to encourage prolonged blooming.
History and Historical Uses
Native to Europe and Asia, Scabiosa has long been cultivated for its ornamental qualities and pollinator support. Its name comes from the Latin "scabies," as it was once believed to treat skin ailments. Today, it's cherished more for its decorative value, bringing elegance to gardens and floral designs alike.
