Seed the Change!

Seeds of Diversity Canada estimates that nearly 75% of vegetable varieties have disappeared. 25% of native plants are at risk and diversity in flower gardens is shrinking.

We are working to restore the biodiversity that was once common in gardens, farms, and nature around Canada!

About
The Scented Flower Collection brings together a harmonious blend of Sweet William, Feverfew, Scented Stock, Dame’s Rocket, and Sunflower Mix to fill your garden with captivating colour, delightful fragrance, and season-long interest. Each variety has been chosen for its beauty, its ability to attract bees and butterflies, and its time-honoured uses in herbal remedies and culinary traditions.

Where Can You Grow
These versatile flowers thrive in full sun to light shade with well-drained, fertile soil. Sow directly in beds or borders, or start perennials indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. They also naturalise beautifully in cottage-style and wildflower plantings.

History and Historical Uses

Sweet William: European cottage-garden favourite; blossoms used in pot-pourris and mild digestive teas.

Feverfew: Traditional European remedy for migraine prevention and anti-inflammatory tinctures.

Scented Stock: Victorian cut-flower staple prized for its spicy-clove fragrance in bouquets and sachets.

Dame’s Rocket: Old-world biennial whose petals were added to salads and candied for sweet garnishes.

Sunflower Mix: Native to North America; seeds pressed for oil and eaten as a nutritious snack—the bright blooms also used in topical salves.

Canadian Zone Information

Zones 3–9: Direct-sow annuals (Stock, Sunflower Mix) after last frost; start perennials (Sweet William, Feverfew, Dame’s Rocket) indoors and transplant once established.

How to Grow and Harvest

Sowing: Scatter seed ¼ in deep; cover lightly with soil and keep moist.

Spacing: Thin seedlings to 8–12 in apart for air circulation.

Maintenance: Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continuous flowering; mulch perennials in autumn.

Harvest: Cut flowers at peak bloom for fresh bouquets; dry petals in small bundles for herbal crafts.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

Isolation: Space related species at least 3 ft apart to prevent cross-pollination.

Collection: Allow seed pods and heads to fully mature and dry on the plant.

Cleaning & Storage: Gently thresh to release seeds; winnow away chaff; store airtight in a cool, dark place.
