About Mixed Tomato Seeds

This creative mix of tomato seeds offers something for everyone! Hand-selected from our favourite tomatoes, this package includes a range of types: beefsteak, slicing, salad, roma, pear, cherry, currant, and grape.

Ideal for gardeners who love surprises, this mix ensures a diverse harvest that is perfect for fresh eating, sauces, salads, or preserving. Whether you're growing in containers, raised beds, or traditional garden rows, these tomatoes will add colour, flavour, and variety to your meals.

Companion plants like basil, marigolds, and nasturtiums pair beautifully with tomatoes, deterring pests and encouraging vigorous growth.

Where Can You Grow Mixed Tomato Seeds

Tomatoes thrive in Zones 3-9 with full sun and well-draining soil. They are highly adaptable and grow well in containers, raised beds, or open fields, making them suitable for all gardening styles.

History and Historical Uses

Tomatoes have been cultivated for centuries, originally domesticated in Central and South America and later spreading worldwide. Their versatility, flavour, and nutritional benefits have made them a staple in cuisines globally. This mix celebrates the diversity and joy of growing your own food, offering gardeners the chance to explore a range of varieties.

Canadian Zone Information

  • Zones 8-9: Sow seeds in January or February, transplant in April, and harvest from June to October.
  • Zones 5-7: Start seeds indoors in late February to mid-March and transplant outdoors in May for a July-September harvest.
  • Zones 3-4: Sow seeds indoors in March or early April, transplant in late May or early June, and harvest from mid-July to early September.

How to Grow and Harvest Mixed Tomato Seeds

  1. Planting: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before your region's last frost. Transplant seedlings into well-drained soil, spacing plants 45-60cm (18-24in) apart.
  2. Support: Use stakes, cages, or trellises for support as plants grow tall and produce fruit.
  3. Watering: Water deeply and consistently, especially during dry periods. Avoid overhead watering to prevent disease.
  4. Pruning: Prune lower leaves and suckers to promote air circulation and reduce disease risk.
  5. Harvesting: Harvest tomatoes when fully coloured and firm, from mid-summer to early autumn.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

  1. Choose Ripe Fruits: Select fully ripe tomatoes from the healthiest plants.
  2. Extract Seeds: Scoop out seeds along with their gel into a clean container.
  3. Fermentation: Add a small amount of water to the container and let sit uncovered for 2-3 days, stirring daily to remove the gel coating.
  4. Rinse and Dry: Rinse the seeds thoroughly, then spread them on a clean towel or screen to dry completely.
  5. Store: Store dried seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Properly stored seeds remain viable for up to 5 years.
