Seed the Change!

Seeds of Diversity Canada estimates that nearly 75% of vegetable varieties have disappeared. 25% of native plants are at risk and diversity in flower gardens is shrinking.

About Valerian Rootstock
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a robust, long-lived perennial herb treasured for its calming properties and showy white blossoms. The root is widely used in herbal teas and tinctures to promote restful sleep and reduce anxiety. These root divisions will produce tall, leafy plants in the first year, with flowers emerging in the second. Bees love the summer blooms, and cats may take a special interest in the roots! Plant in a sunny, well-drained location and enjoy a low-maintenance and functional addition to your herb garden.

Where Can You Grow Valerian?
Well-suited to Zones 4–9, valerian grows best in full sun to part shade in fertile, well-drained soil. It naturalises easily and is ideal for borders, herb beds, and pollinator-friendly gardens.

History and Historical Uses
With a recorded history of use since ancient Greece, valerian root has long been regarded as a soothing remedy for insomnia, anxiety, and nervous tension. It became popular in Europe during the Middle Ages and remains a mainstay in herbal medicine today.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8–9: Plant rootstock directly outdoors in autumn or early spring.
Zones 5–7: Plant in spring once frost danger has passed; mulch in winter.
Zones 3–4: Best started in spring in a sheltered location; mulch well to overwinter.

How to Grow and Harvest Valerian
Planting: Space root divisions 30–45cm (12–18in) apart; cover crowns lightly with soil.

Harvesting: Roots can be harvested in fall of year two or three.
Maintenance: Cut back flower stalks after bloom to direct energy to roots.
