Metchosin Farm is a Certified Organic Seed Grower (IOPA #1962) located in Metchosin, BC. \n \nUnlike EVERY OTHER major Survival Kit provider and all large seed companies selling online the Canadian market, Metchosin Farm actually GROWS 100% of its own seed crops, rather than importing them from the international industrial market. This means our seeds are FRESHER and will LAST LONGER than most seeds you are normally able to purchase. We maintain quality genetics and develop our own varieties of food plants, some that are not available anywhere else. As experienced seed farmers and gardeners, we’ve chosen our Victory Garden seed varieties for practical reasons - most importantly, with nutritional content and ease of growing in mind. As an example, we’ve included sprouting broccoli over a commercial broccoli, as things like cauliflower and broccoli can be fussy to grow and take up a large amount of space in your garden for a relatively small harvest. Sprouting broccoli is easy-to-grow, and all parts of the plant are highly edible, making it MUCH more practical for survival, particularly through the winter months. We also believe in a HOLISTIC GARDEN - which is why we've included flowers and herbs that are not only medicinal (Cough, Flu, Skin, antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic [pain killer]), but will help with pest control and attract valuable pollinating insects. And they are gorgeous! Who says an apocalypse has to be ugly? We also know from Fiona's work as a survival and plant expert consulting for Les Stroud (Survivorman and Wild Harvest), ITV America and others that your mental state is critical to maintaining calm and focus in a challenging situation. Flowers and the enjoyable flavour of herbs are important!

SEED STORAGE: Seeds need to be stored in a dark, dry, and non-fluctuating cool space. DO NOT put these in your freezer - each time you take them out, it's hard on them. Best to put them somewhere like a cool cupboard.

WHAT IS A VICTORY GARDEN? Victory gardens are home vegetable gardens that were originally born out of necessity. They got their start during World Wars I and II, when people grew their own produce to free up food for the war effort and help stabilize the country’s food supply. Both back then and now, victory gardens are all about producing large volumes of food quickly and efficiently.

DID YOU KNOW: An estimated 97% of the vegetable seed grown each year here in Canada is IMPORTED (SeedChange.org) - which means seed security (and food security!) are issues RIGHT NOW, and growing and saving your own seeds is a radical act. Be a part of the solution - grow a garden, save your seeds! ALL of the seeds we grow, and that are in our Survival Garden Pack, are open-pollinated. These are pure-bred seeds, the plant equivalent of a chocolate labrador, and if you respect basic isolation distances (like your neighbour doesn't own an intact poodle), then YOU CAN SAVE YOUR OWN SEEDS AND NEVER HAVE TO PURCHASE THEM AGAIN. If your neighbours dog jumps over the fence, the puppies will be a labradoodle, which is an F1 hybrid, which means YOU CANNOT SAVE THE SEEDS AND HAVE THEM BE TRUE TO TYPE. In the plant world, beets and chard are closely related and can cross pollinate, for example. Check out any major seed catalogue, and you will find an increasing, and worrying, number of hybrid seeds. The genetics for these are generally controlled by large corporations and they know that you have to repurchase these seeds every year!

KNOW YOUR SEEDS: Do you have seeds now from other companies? Check your packages. Do they tell you WHERE and WHEN those seeds were grown? Does the package say HOW the seeds were grown? Or does it just tell you when to use them by, or when they were packaged? Warning - these are not guaranteed fresh seeds and can contain product grown in various years, and even from different countries, mixed together.

NEW TO GARDENING AND GROWING PLANT FOODS?: We STRONGLY encourage you to plant these fresh seeds rather than waiting until an emergency situation, and to experiment with saving seeds yourself. It's easy, it's fun and its deeply satisfying. WARNING - this could be the gateway into starting to garden for fun, and even developing your own plant food varieties if some of your seeds accidentally cross pollinate…. Indeed, these ‘accidents’ are how a rich diversity of food seed varietes have developed across the world since the dawn of agriculture.

I’ve been spoiled by Fiona’s chard and can no longer eat grocery store bought chard. Metchosin farm is a magical seed bank with some of the most unique and carefully created/birthed vegetables and fruits. If you live in the PNW her seeds will be the best thing you ever grow in your garden.

My seeds arrived less than a week after ordering, and so far everything I’ve planted is sprouting beautifully. I have every confidence my family will be feasting like royalty from our garden this summer. Thank you metchosin farm!
