Growing Information

About Wormwood
A striking and resilient perennial, wormwood is best known today as a key ingredient in absinthe and vermouth. This plant’s silvery-grey, deeply cut foliage and upright growth habit make it an attractive addition to both herb and ornamental gardens. Traditionally valued for its medicinal properties, wormwood has long been used as a bitter tonic to stimulate the appetite and support gallbladder, liver and digestive health. In higher concentrations, it has also been used as a vermifuge, sedative and hallucinogen. Its aromatic nature also makes it a useful companion plant in pest control. Caution is advised: wormwood contains thujone and should only be used under the guidance of a trained herbalist.

Where Can You Grow Wormwood?
Wormwood is suited to Zones 3–9 and prefers full sun with dry, sandy or well-drained soil. Once established, it is drought tolerant and performs well in exposed or poor soil conditions.

History and Historical Uses
Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) has a long-standing presence in herbal medicine and folk traditions across Europe and Asia. Its bitter compounds have been used for centuries in tonics and liqueurs, and it is perhaps most famously associated with 19th-century absinthe culture. Medicinally, wormwood has been prescribed for parasites, poor digestion, and melancholy. Due to its potent chemical profile, particularly the presence of thujone, use should be cautious and informed.

How to Grow and Harvest Wormwood
Planting: Sow seeds shallowly in early spring; press into soil but do not cover.

Harvesting: Harvest aerial parts before flowering for best medicinal potency.
Maintenance: Cut back in late summer to encourage bushier growth and prevent spreading.
