About Blanket Flower

Blanket Flower (Gaillardia aristata) is a vibrant, easy-to-grow, native perennial that produces masses of stunning yellow and orange daisy-like blooms all summer long. Its bright, cheerful flowers are perfect for pollinator gardens, borders, and bouquets, adding warmth and charm to any space.

This short-lived perennial thrives in warm, dry conditions with well-drained soil, making it a great choice for low-maintenance gardening. Blanket Flower is highly drought-tolerant once established and a magnet for bees and butterflies.

Where Can You Grow Blanket Flower

Blanket Flower grows well in Zones 3-9, thriving in full sun and sandy or rocky soils. It’s ideal for wildflower gardens, xeriscaping (landscaping for reduced irrigation), or as a bright accent in borders and containers.

History and Historical Uses

Native to North America, Blanket Flower has long been appreciated for its hardiness and beauty. Indigenous peoples used the plant for medicinal purposes, while modern gardeners value its ability to bring vibrant colour to challenging, dry environments.

Canadian Zone Information

  • Zones 8-9: Sow seeds directly in late autumn or early spring.
  • Zones 5-7: Start seeds indoors in late winter or sow outdoors in early spring.
  • Zones 3-4: Sow seeds in early spring after the last frost. Mulch lightly to protect young plants.

How to Grow and Harvest Blanket Flower

  1. Planting: Sow seeds 0.5cm (1/4in) deep, spacing plants 30-45cm (12-18in) apart in well-drained soil.
  2. Watering: Water moderately during establishment; once mature, the plant tolerates drought well.
  3. Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming.
  4. Maintenance: Divide clumps every 2-3 years to rejuvenate plants and promote new growth.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

  1. Allow Flowers to Go to Seed: Leave some blooms on the plant to dry and develop seed heads.
  2. Harvest Seeds: Once seed heads turn brown and dry, cut them off and place them in a paper bag.
  3. Clean and Dry: Shake or crush the seed heads to release the seeds. Remove debris and spread seeds on a screen to dry completely.
  4. Store: Store dried seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Seeds remain viable for 2-3 years.
