Broad Bean Mix

Vicia faba

A classic favourite in the vegetable garden, known for its high nutritional value, adaptability, and ease of growth. This mix includes a stunning array of white, black, and purple-flowered varieties, making it as attractive as it is productive.

Pods can be enjoyed whole when young (up to 8cm/3in), shelled and eaten fresh, or dried for storage. The plants are a magnet for pollinators, adding ecological benefits while ensuring bountiful yields.

Where Can You Grow Broad Bean Mix

Broad Beans thrive in Zones 3-9, preferring full sun and well-drained soil. They are highly frost-tolerant and ideal for early spring planting. Perfect for garden beds, raised beds, or naturalised settings.

History and Historical Uses

Broad beans have been cultivated for thousands of years, originating in the Mediterranean and spreading across Europe. As a staple in British vegetable gardens, they have long been valued for their versatility and nutritional benefits. These beans are packed with protein, fibre, and essential vitamins, making them a vital ingredient in many traditional dishes.

Canadian Zone Information

  • Zones 8-9: Sow seeds directly in early spring or autumn for successive harvests.
  • Zones 5-7: Plant seeds outdoors in early spring, as soon as the soil can be worked.
  • Zones 3-4: Start seeds indoors in early spring or plant outdoors with protection to extend the season.

How to Grow and Harvest Broad Bean Mix

  1. Planting: Sow seeds 2.5-5cm (1-2in) deep and 15-20cm (6-8in) apart in rows 45-60cm (18-24in) apart.
  2. Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during flowering and pod formation.
  3. Harvesting: Harvest young pods for fresh eating, or allow pods to mature fully for shelling or drying. Regular picking encourages continuous production.
  4. Support: Provide light staking or a trellis if plants grow tall in windy areas.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

  1. Allow Pods to Mature: Let some pods dry completely on the plant until they turn brown and brittle.
  2. Harvest Seeds: Collect the dried pods and remove the seeds.
  3. Clean and Dry: Spread seeds on a clean towel or screen to dry for 1-2 weeks.
  4. Store: Store seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Properly stored seeds remain viable for 3-5 years.
