Growing Information

About Buckwheat

Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) is a versatile and fast-growing crop valued for its ability to enrich garden soil and support biodiversity. Often used as a cover crop or green manure, buckwheat helps suppress weeds, improve soil structure, and add organic matter to the garden.

The small white flowers attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, making buckwheat a beneficial addition to any growing space. Its seeds are not only delicious and nutritious but also serve as an excellent winter feed for birds if left to mature in the garden.

Where Can You Grow Buckwheat

Buckwheat thrives in Zones 3-9, preferring full sun and well-drained soil. It grows well in garden beds, fields, or as a naturalised crop in larger spaces.

History and Historical Uses

Buckwheat has been cultivated for centuries as a nutritious grain and soil-building crop. Native to Southeast Asia, it became a staple in European and North American agriculture due to its adaptability and multiple uses. Traditionally milled into flour for breads, pancakes, and noodles, buckwheat remains a favourite for its distinct, nutty flavour and health benefits.

Canadian Zone Information

  • Zones 8-9: Sow seeds in spring for soil improvement or a late summer harvest.
  • Zones 5-7: Direct sow seeds outdoors after the last frost for a summer crop.
  • Zones 3-4: Plant seeds in late spring for the best results in cooler climates.

How to Grow and Harvest Buckwheat

  1. Planting: Sow seeds 1-2cm (0.5-1in) deep, broadcasting them across the soil or planting in rows spaced 15-20cm (6-8in) apart.
  2. Watering: Water lightly during germination; buckwheat is drought-tolerant once established.
  3. Harvesting:
    • As a Green Manure: Cut and till plants into the soil when flowers begin to bloom.
    • For Seeds: Allow seeds to mature and dry on the plant before harvesting.
  4. Maintenance: Buckwheat grows quickly and requires minimal care, making it ideal for beginners.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

  1. Allow to Seed: Let plants mature fully until seeds are firm and dark.
  2. Harvest Seeds: Cut plants and allow them to dry in a well-ventilated area.
  3. Clean and Store: Gently thresh to release seeds from hulls. Store seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Properly stored seeds remain viable for up to 3 years.
