Seed the Change!

Seeds of Diversity Canada estimates that nearly 75% of vegetable varieties have disappeared. 25% of native plants are at risk and diversity in flower gardens is shrinking.

We are working to restore the biodiversity that was once common in gardens, farms, and nature around Canada!

About Canterbury Bells

Canterbury Bells (Campanula medium) is a classic biennial known for its elegant bell-shaped flowers in shades of pink and purple. Blooming in the second year, these tall, graceful plants bring vibrant colour to your garden from spring into summer. A favourite among pollinators, Canterbury Bells adds beauty and ecological benefits to borders, cottage gardens, and cut flower arrangements.

While typically grown as a biennial, this hardy plant can behave as a perennial in warmer regions, coming back year after year with proper care.

Where Can You Grow Canterbury Bells

Canterbury Bells thrives in Zones 4-9, preferring full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. It grows beautifully in garden beds, borders, and containers, adding height and charm to any setting.

History and Historical Uses

Native to Southern Europe, Canterbury Bells has been cherished in gardens for centuries. Its unique bell-shaped blooms have made it a symbol of gratitude and constancy, often included in traditional floral displays and bouquets.

Canadian Zone Information

  • Zones 8-9: Sow seeds in autumn or early spring for naturalised growth.
  • Zones 5-7: Start seeds indoors in late winter or sow outdoors in spring after the last frost.
  • Zones 4: Sow seeds outdoors in spring or mulch heavily in autumn to protect young plants.

How to Grow and Harvest Canterbury Bells

  1. Planting: Sow seeds 0.5cm (1/4in) deep and space plants 30-45cm (12-18in) apart in nutrient-rich soil.
  2. Watering: Water regularly to establish roots but allow soil to dry slightly between watering.
  3. Maintenance: Remove spent blooms to encourage prolonged flowering and prevent self-seeding if undesired.
  4. Harvesting: Cut flowers when they are just beginning to open for long-lasting bouquets.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

  1. Allow to Flower and Seed: Let some blooms mature and form seed pods.
  2. Harvest Seeds: Collect pods once they are dry and brown, before they split open.
  3. Dry and Clean: Remove seeds from pods and spread them on a towel to dry completely.
  4. Store: Store dried seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Properly stored seeds remain viable for up to 3 years.
