About Chamomile
Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) is a beloved herb with a history spanning over 2,000 years. Known for its daisy-like flowers and soothing fragrance, chamomile is widely used in herbal medicine, particularly for its relaxing and anti-inflammatory properties.
The small, abundant blooms are perfect for fresh or dried teas, while their gentle aroma attracts pollinators and beneficial insects to the garden. Once established, chamomile readily self-seeds, ensuring a lasting presence in herb beds, borders, and containers.
Where Can You Grow Chamomile
Chamomile thrives in Zones 3-9, preferring full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. It is an excellent choice for herb gardens, flower borders, or container planting.
History and Historical Uses
Chamomile has been used for centuries in herbal medicine, dating back to ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Traditionally, it has been valued for promoting relaxation, aiding digestion, and soothing skin irritations. Today, chamomile tea remains one of the most popular herbal infusions worldwide.
Canadian Zone Information
- Zones 8-9: Direct sow seeds in autumn or early spring for continuous blooms.
- Zones 5-7: Start seeds indoors in late winter and transplant outdoors after the last frost.
- Zones 3-4: Sow seeds in spring after the last frost and mulch in autumn for winter protection.
How to Grow and Harvest Chamomile
- Planting: Sow seeds 1mm (1/16in) deep, lightly pressing them into the soil without covering. Space plants 15-30cm (6-12in) apart.
- Watering: Keep soil evenly moist during germination; mature plants tolerate drought well.
- Harvesting: Pick flowers when fully open and dry them in a well-ventilated area for tea or medicinal use.
- Maintenance: Allow some flowers to go to seed for natural reseeding.
Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply
- Allow to Flower and Seed: Let some blooms mature and dry naturally on the plant.
- Harvest Seeds: Once seed heads turn brown and dry, collect them before they disperse.
- Dry and Clean: Separate seeds from chaff and spread them on a towel to dry completely.
- Store: Store seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Properly stored seeds remain viable for up to 3 years.
