Sage thrives in well-drained soil and full sun, requiring little water once mature. Initially, plants should be kept moist until established, after which they become highly drought-tolerant. Its attractive foliage and delicate purple flowers also make it a great ornamental addition to herb gardens, borders, and pollinator-friendly landscapes.

Where Can You Grow Culinary Sage?

Sage grows well in Zones 4-9, preferring full sun and dry, well-drained soil. It is well-suited for raised beds, garden borders, and container gardening, making it an excellent choice for small spaces and kitchen gardens.

History and Historical Uses

Native to the Mediterranean, sage has been cultivated for centuries for culinary, medicinal, and spiritual purposes. Traditionally, it was valued for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as its use in preserving food. Today, it remains a staple herb in European, Middle Eastern, and North American cuisines.

Canadian Zone Information

Zones 8-9: Direct sow in autumn or early spring for early growth.
Zones 5-7: Start seeds indoors in late winter or direct sow in spring after the last frost.
Zones 4: Direct sow in spring or mulch heavily to protect plants over winter.

How to Grow and Harvest Culinary Sage

  1. Planting: Sow seeds 3mm (1/8in) deep, spacing plants 30-45cm (12-18in) apart.
  2. Watering: Keep soil lightly moist until plants establish; reduce watering once mature.
  3. Harvesting:
    • Pick leaves as needed, choosing young, tender leaves for the best flavour.
    • Cut whole stems for drying and long-term storage.
  4. Maintenance: Prune plants in early spring to encourage bushier growth.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

  1. Allow to Flower and Seed: Leave some plants to fully mature and set seed.
  2. Harvest Seeds: Once flower stalks dry, collect and shake out the seeds.
  3. Dry and Clean: Remove any plant debris and spread seeds on a towel to fully dry.
  4. Store: Keep seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Properly stored seeds remain viable for up to 3 years.

Do you do sell at the farm?

No.

We do have a farmstand that is open during the season: March/April through to June/July

Will my order have tracking?

Maybe.

We ship all seed packages using Letter Mail through Canada Post.

However, if you order any Sprays, Bouquets, Root Stock, or Tubers; we automatically add protected shipping in a prepaid Canada Post box. These have a tracking number.

How much does shipping cost?

Save $20 when you spend $200

All our Shipping has a handling fee.

Shipping starts at $6 and increases incrementally for seed packages only.

If you purchase Sprays, Bouquets, Root Stock, or Tubers; Shipping will increase by $18 and go up incrementally.

We charge shipping rates that are fair to our customers and allow us to operate as a small farm.

What is your Customer Satisfaction policy?

We guarantee germination up to 75% on all our seeds in proper conditions.

That means we will replace them.

We make no guarantees on our Forager Pet products, other than that they are safe for the animals listed. But do reach out if your pet isn't happy.

Mistakes happen and can be fixed. So missing items, wrong items, or even damaged items can be replaced.

We will always work with you to find an appropriate solution.

How long does shipping take?

Letter Mail can take up to 5-6 weeks.

Parcels can take up to 1-2 weeks.

We ship Wednesdays which can also lead to delays.

Are all your products 100% Canadian?

Yes. All our products are grown in Metchosin BC or foraged from surrounding forests.

What is your refund policy?

We are a resolution first small business. That means we would love for you to be happy with our products.

However, if you want to return or refund, this can be done.
