About Evening Primrose
Evening Primrose (Oenothera biennis) is a hardy, drought-tolerant biennial that produces tall stems of cheerful yellow flowers throughout the summer. Known for its resilient nature and self-seeding ability, once established, this plant will return year after year in the garden.

Highly attractive to hummingbirds and pollinators, Evening Primrose is valued both for its ornamental beauty and its medicinal properties. Traditionally, it has been used for its oil-rich seeds, which contain beneficial fatty acids.

Where Can You Grow Evening Primrose?
Evening Primrose thrives in Zones 3-9, preferring full sun and well-drained soil. It is well-suited for wildflower meadows, pollinator gardens, and low-maintenance landscapes.

History and Historical Uses
Native to North America, Evening Primrose has been traditionally used for its medicinal benefits, particularly its seed oil, which is rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). For centuries, it has been cultivated for skin health, digestive support, and herbal remedies. Today, it remains a popular plant in herbal medicine and naturalized landscapes.

How to Grow and Harvest Evening Primrose

  • Planting: Sow seeds 3mm (1/8in) deep, spacing plants 30-45cm (12-18in) apart.
  • Watering: Keep soil moist until establisshed, then water sparingly.
  • Harvesting:
    • Flowers can be harvested fresh for medicinal use or dried for later use.
    • Allow seed pods to mature for seed collection and oil extraction.
  • Maintenance: Trim dead flower stalks to encourage reseeding and prolonged blooming.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

  • Allow to Flower and Seed: Leave some plants to fully mature and develop seed pods.
  • Harvest Seeds: Once seed pods dry and split open, collect seeds before dispersal.
  • Dry and Clean: Separate seeds from husks and allow them to fully dry.
  • Store: Keep seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Properly stored seeds remain viable for up to 3 years.
