Growing Information

About Federle Tomato
Federle Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is a prolific heirloom variety that produces long, tapered red fruit with a small tail at the end. Known for its rich, full-bodied flavour and low seed count, this variety is perfect for making thick sauces, pastes, and salsas.

With its vigorous, indeterminate growth habit, Federle continues to set fruit throughout the season, making it a valuable addition to any home garden. This decorative and high-yielding plant thrives in warm, sunny conditions and is well-suited for raised beds, garden rows, and greenhouse growing.

Where Can You Grow Federle Tomato?
Federle Tomatoes thrive in Zones 3-9, requiring full sun and well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. They perform best when supported with stakes, cages, or trellises due to their tall, sprawling vines.

History and Historical Uses
Federle Tomato is an heirloom variety from the United States, known for its unique shape and excellent processing qualities. Traditionally grown for homemade sauces, salsas, and pastes, it remains a favourite among gardeners and chefs alike.

Canadian Zone Information

Zones 3-4: Start seeds indoors in late March or early April, transplant in late May or early June, and harvest from mid-July to early September.

How to Grow and Harvest Federle Tomato

  • Planting: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost, transplant outdoors once the soil is warm.
  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, ensuring good drainage to prevent disease.
  • Support: Use stakes or cages to support the vigorous indeterminate vines.
  • Pruning: Remove lower leaves and prune suckers for better airflow and fruit production.
  • Harvesting: Pick tomatoes when fully red and slightly firm, allowing them to ripen on the vine for the best flavour.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

  • Choose the Best Fruit: Select fully ripened, healthy tomatoes for seed saving.
  • Extract the Seeds: Slice the tomato and scoop the seeds into a bowl of water.
  • Fermentation: Let seeds soak for 2-3 days, stirring occasionally to separate viable seeds.
  • Rinse and Dry: Strain, rinse well, and spread on a towel or screen to fully dry.
  • Store: Keep seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Properly stored seeds remain viable for up to 5 years.
