Honey Cherry Tomato

Honey Cherry Tomato

Solanum lycopersicum

Honey Cherry Tomato is aptly named for its delightful sweetness and tangy flavour. Producing peachy-orange cherry-sized fruits on tall, vigorous plants, it thrives even in cooler or wetter growing conditions. Decorative and delicious, Honey Cherry Tomatoes are ideal for container gardening, patio planters, or ornamental gardens. The indeterminate plants benefit from staking or cages due to their height and productivity, providing a steady harvest of tasty tomatoes throughout the growing season.

Where Can You Grow Honey Cherry Tomato?
Honey Cherry Tomato grows successfully in Zones 3-9, preferring full sun, fertile soil, and good drainage. Well-suited to garden beds, large containers, greenhouses, and patio growing.

History and Historical Uses
Cherry tomatoes have long been garden favourites, valued for their ease of cultivation, prolific production, and sweet, snack-sized fruits. Honey Cherry is a modern variety selected for exceptional sweetness, consistent production, and adaptability to variable weather conditions.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Start seeds indoors early; transplant outdoors after frost. Harvest continuously all summer.
Zones 5-7: Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost, transplant outdoors when the soil warms.
Zones 3-4: Best grown in greenhouses or containers; start indoors early for extended harvest.

How to Grow and Harvest Honey Cherry Tomato

  • Planting: Sow seeds 6mm (¼in) deep indoors; transplant seedlings 45-60cm (18-24in) apart after frost danger has passed.
  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, particularly during fruit development.
  • Support: Stake, cage, or trellis plants for support as they grow tall and produce heavily.
  • Harvesting: Pick fruit regularly once fully coloured to encourage continuous fruiting.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

  • Select Best Fruits: Choose ripe, healthy fruits from vigorous plants for seed saving.
  • Extract Seeds: Scoop seeds into water and allow them to ferment for 2-3 days to remove gel coating.
  • Rinse and Dry: Rinse seeds thoroughly and dry completely on paper towels or screens.
  • Store: Store dry seeds in airtight containers in a cool, dark location; viable for up to 5 years.
